and what is and xlr connector?

XLR is the three-prong connector found on all Mic Cable. Beyond that, it's unnecessarily complex.

And I think he uses a good one. A nice shiny one. Really, if you're trolling for a mic reccomendation, the best and cheapest mic is the Shure SM58. A hundred bucks, worth every penny. The industry standard, really.
